TL;DR
- A malfunction in a collection shaft at the Duboko landfill near Užice led to the spilling of leachate into the Turski potok.
- The incident released toxic substances into the environment, comparable in negative effect to a 2024 fire at the same landfill.
- An environmental group labeled the spill an "ecological crime," reporting 800 cubic meters of "most carcinogenic substances" were released.
- The Ministry announced the leak was contained and the situation under control.
- A professor highlighted that previous officials responsible for the landfill should have been held accountable, preventing this incident.
- He called for current local and national officials to be held responsible to avoid future environmental disasters.
- The professor also questioned why the Duboko landfill, closed in November 2024, was not remediated, explaining that closed landfills remain active sites with ongoing chemical and biological processes that can produce highly toxic compounds and gases, increasing fire risk.
