Djokovic Storms Through First Set as Paris Run Bolsters Turin Hopes

Novak Djokovic defeated Rinky Hijikata in the Paris Masters second round, taking the opening set 6-2 and strengthening his push for the ATP Finals in Turin.

Novak Djokovic defeated Rinky Hijikata in the second round of the Paris Masters, combining a fast start with sustained pressure to win 6-2 in the opening set and move closer to the round of 16. The result also strengthened his position in the race to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin.

The match began with Djokovic immediately attacking Hijikata’s serve. He converted his first break opportunity to lead 1-0, then held comfortably for a 2-0 advantage. The Australian saved two break points in the next game before finally getting on the scoreboard, making it 2-1.

Hijikata continued to fend off pressure, saving further break points to remain within reach at 3-2. Djokovic, however, protected his own service games and maintained control. One pro-government live account described the opening as “an excellent start in Paris,” highlighting the early break and Djokovic’s clean hold.

The decisive sequence came at 5-2. After missing two earlier break chances in the game, Djokovic converted the third to secure a double break and serve for the set. He closed it out 6-2 in less than 40 minutes, with another report calling the performance “a convincing first set” and saying he was a step closer to the last 16.

The contrasting tone of the coverage was most visible in the descriptions of Djokovic’s dominance. One report called him “furious” and said Hijikata was unable to dictate the match, while also stressing the wider implications for Turin. Djokovic’s route to qualification could improve significantly if he reaches the Paris semifinals, depending on results elsewhere.

Hijikata opened the second set by holding serve, but Djokovic had already established the match’s central pattern: early aggression, repeated pressure on return and control of the scoreboard.
