Pro-government says club canceled Jelena Karleuša show over political messaging
A German club canceled Jelena Karleuša’s October 31, 2026 performance after reviewing her political statements. The decision follows her outspoken support for Aleksandar Vučić and criticism of the student-backed election result.
A club in Essen has canceled Jelena Karleuša’s scheduled performance on October 31, 2026, after reviewing her recent public statements about Serbia’s political situation. In a notice to guests, management said the decision followed “serious consideration” of her statements and political views, adding that the venue was “a place for music and entertainment, not a platform for political propaganda.”1
The club also said its principles were not for sale and that no performance mattered more than respecting its guests and the values it represents. The announcement came after tickets and reservations for the event had already been publicized, leaving attendees to reassess their plans.2
The political dispute intensified after Serbia’s snap parliamentary election on October 25. Preliminary results cited in the reports gave the student-backed list the lead, while Karleuša had openly supported President Aleksandar Vučić and his political camp. She reacted angrily to the result, writing that those who voted for the student list had done more harm to Serbia than “all occupiers, conquerors and enemies of the Serbian people” in history.1
When one user urged her to stop posting about the election, Karleuša replied by calling her critics “traitors of their own country.”1 The club’s statement did not mention Vučić or the election by name, but directly linked the cancellation to Karleuša’s political views.
The decision has since drawn attention from fans and Serbian media, turning what was expected to be a concert in Essen into another flashpoint in the country’s polarized political debate.
