Djokovic’s Basel Return Comes With “Mines” From the First Round
Novak Djokovic will face Hugo Humbert in his Basel opener after a 15-year absence, but the draw could quickly lead to Alexander Bublik and top seed Ben Shelton as he pursues points for Turin.
Novak Djokovic will begin his long-awaited return to the Basel tournament against Hugo Humbert, the world No. 35. The Serbian has not played in Basel for 15 years, and his opening-round assignment immediately gives the comeback a difficult edge.
The draw, announced ahead of the tournament, places the winner of Jan-Lennard Struff’s match against a qualifier in Djokovic’s projected second round. A quarterfinal could then bring seventh seed Alexander Bublik, ranked 19th in the world. The route is described as “not an easy path to the title.”1
The potential challenge would increase in the semifinals, where top seed and world No. 4 Ben Shelton could await. A possible final could feature Rafael Jodar, Arthur Fils, Taylor Fritz or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, depending on how the other half of the draw develops.
A second account highlighted the same danger in sharper terms, describing Djokovic’s Basel bracket as a tournament with “mines everywhere.”2 That framing contrasts with the broader competitive opportunity: Djokovic needs a strong result in Switzerland to remain in contention for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin.
The draw therefore places two pressures on the former world No. 1. He must first navigate a potentially awkward opening against Humbert, then survive a succession of highly ranked threats if he is to make a deep run. His return adds attention to an already demanding section of the tournament.
