Pro-government says N1 and Nova S broke election silence as regulator threatens action

Serbia’s media regulator said it found election-related content on N1 and Nova S during the October 23 silence period. Pro-government outlets cast the finding as proof of violations, while the regulator said monitoring and possible legal measures would continue.

Serbia’s Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) said on October 23 that it had identified programming on N1 and Nova S that was inconsistent with obligations during the election-silence period. The authority said the restriction bars election-related programming during the 48 hours before voting and until polling stations close.

REM listed several broadcasts by time and program. On Nova S, the flagged content appeared during Probudi se from 7:53 to 7:55 a.m. and from 8:02 to 8:18 a.m. On N1, the authority cited Novi dan from 8:03 to 8:04 a.m. and Vesti from 8:21 to 8:22 a.m.

The regulator said its professional service had informed the editors of both stations about the material and reminded them of their responsibilities under election-campaign rules. REM added that it would continue monitoring broadcasters and take measures provided for by law.

Pro-government coverage presented the announcement as an official confirmation that the two outlets had violated the silence period. One report also accused N1 of repeatedly airing a segment critical of the state leadership and highlighted a Nova S report about a businessman linked to contracts with public institutions.

The available reports did not include a response from N1 or Nova S. REM’s statement described the material as contrary to regulatory obligations, while the pro-government accounts used stronger language and framed the alleged breaches as part of a broader editorial attack on the authorities.
