TL;DR
- An unusual green ice phenomenon occurred on Lipno lake in the Czech Republic at the end of 2025.
- Hydrologists from the Biological Center of the Czech Academy of Sciences analyzed samples and confirmed the green color was caused by the cyanobacteria Woronichinia naegeliana.
- This bacteria thrives on excess nutrients, particularly phosphorus, largely due to human impact.
- The prolonged presence of cyanobacteria biomass, unusual for colder months, combined with stable weather and freezing temperatures, led to the formation of 'green ice'.
- The green ice disappeared after heavy snowfall reduced light penetration.
- This event is linked to long-term climate change and the process of eutrophication, suggesting such surprising phenomena may become more frequent.
- The detailed observations from Lipno lake add to the limited global documentation of cyanobacteria existing under ice cover.
