20 YEARS LATER! How Montenegrin independence was turned into an anti-Serbian concept: Montenegro is an old state, but its rulers competed in Serbianness

Montenegro celebrates 20 years since the declaration of independence and restoration of statehood, decided by a referendum on May 21, 2006, where 55.5% of voters said "for" and 44.5% "against". During two decades of separation, relations between Serbia and Montenegro have gone through turbulent phases and are not at the level deserved by two fraternal nations, as they are often described due to their extreme closeness and cultural and historical connection.
