TL;DR

  • The Banjica concentration camp, established on July 5, 1941, by the German Gestapo, operated as a major site of torture and execution for anti-fascists in occupied Serbia.
  • The camp was run by Serbian collaborationist forces, including the Special Police, the Nedić regime's Serbian State Guard, and Ljotić's 'Zbor' organization.
  • Prisoners were categorized into those sentenced to death, those sent for forced labor or to German camps, hostages, and minors for 're-education'.
  • A total of 24,000 individuals passed through the camp, with 4,166 documented deaths, including men, women, and children.
  • After the war, collaborators like Svetozar Vujković and Božidar Bećarević were handed over to Tito's authorities, tried for war crimes, and sentenced to death.
  • The article questions the motives behind the prolonged trials of some collaborators, suggesting their knowledge was utilized by the post-war security services.
