Maksim was a staunch opponent of the monothelite heresy, which stated Christ had a single will, derived from the earlier heresy of Eutyches.
He challenged both the emperor and the patriarch to uphold the doctrine of two wills and two natures in Christ.
Maksim's efforts resulted in councils in Carthage and Rome anathematizing the monothelite teaching.
He endured severe persecution, including torture, imprisonment, and mutilation (tongue and hand cut off), before being exiled to Skitska.
He died in prison in 666 AD after three years of confinement.
