TL;DR
- A significant spill of toxic concentrated sludge occurred at the "Duboko" landfill, polluting the Lužnica river and its tributaries.
- Environmental activists reported witnessing black, frothy water in the affected stream.
- Activists claim the sludge was intentionally released, while the Ministry attributes it to a malfunction in a collection shaft.
- Deputy Mayor of Užice, Rajko Radosavljević, allegedly physically assaulted activists who were protesting at the landfill entrance, causing injuries.
- Authorities, including environmental and water inspectors, are investigating the incident.
- The Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Užice has been notified and will engage the Institute of Public Health for water sampling.
- Previous warnings from the "Da ne dišemo Duboko" association highlighted the risk of ecological catastrophe due to improper storage of hazardous waste.
- The landfill had previously been ordered to repair damaged lagoons and treatment facilities.
- A fire at the landfill in 2024 had already damaged lagoons, raising concerns about contaminated water entering the Turski stream.
