TL;DR

  • Serbia is the first country in the Western Balkans to introduce organized lung cancer screening.
  • The screening program aims to enable early diagnosis, significantly increasing chances of successful treatment.
  • Despite early detection, many patients still rely solely on chemotherapy as their treatment option.
  • Advanced therapies available in the region and Europe are not yet accessible to all Serbian lung cancer patients.
  • The screening program, conducted from November 2024 to December 2025, has identified lung cancer in over 100 individuals in its early stages.
  • There is an expectation that indications for modern treatments will be expanded and new drugs added to the positive list.
  • Approximately 70% of lung cancer cases are diagnosed at the metastatic stage, limiting treatment options.
  • Risk factors include smoking, air pollution, and a lack of awareness about preventive screenings.
  • Cancer is projected to become the leading cause of death globally by 2035, highlighting the importance of screening and early detection.
