We think we're in peak shape until fifty, but the body has other plans: Here's when we actually reach our peak fitness

Many of us believe that a serious decline in strength and fitness is reserved for old age. However, a new long-term study shows that our physical peak comes much earlier than we think, and the first signs of decline can appear as early as around age 35, regardless of how much we exercise. However, although we cannot stop aging, the way we age largely depends on us.

We think we're in peak shape until fifty, but the body has other plans: Here's when we actually reach our peak fitness

TL;DR

  • Peak physical fitness, including muscle endurance and aerobic capacity, is reached between ages 26 and 36 for both men and women.
  • Muscle strength peaks around age 27 for men and age 19 for women.
  • After the peak, physical capabilities decline gradually, starting at 0.3-0.6% annually and accelerating later.
  • By age 63, individuals experience a total physical decline of 30-48% from their personal maximum.
  • Regular physical activity, maintained from a young age or started in adulthood, helps preserve and even improve physical capabilities.
  • It is never too late to start exercising to slow down the aging process of physical abilities.
