A Different Experience of the Past
Valjevo – 'Stari Ras – Capital of Raška', 'Kupinik – Last Capital of Serbian Despots', 'Mileševac – Under the Wing of the White Angel', 'Maglič – Symbol of the Valley of Roses', 'Kovin on the Lim – Neither in Heaven nor on Earth', are just some of the captions for the attractive photographs presented at the exhibition 'Fortresses and Fortified Cities of Serbia', by author Svetlana Dingarac, opened at the City Gallery in Valjevo. According to the author, the exhibition is part of a broader project launched in 2018 with the aim of rescuing this significant segment of national cultural heritage from oblivion and bringing it closer to the public. Throughout history, fortresses served not only as fortification and military objects but were centers of political, economic, and cultural life in these regions, thus representing important testimony to our country's past, emphasizes Svetlana Dingarac. She adds that her project covers fortifications from the Late Antique and Early Byzantine periods, as well as the Middle Ages, with plans to cover fortresses from other epochs.
