TL;DR
- Serbia is joining the SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) system, with full implementation expected in May.
- Transaction fees for Euro payments to EU countries will decrease from an average of 20-40 euros to 1-2 euros.
- The SEPA system will enable faster, cheaper, and more standardized Euro payments, treating them like domestic transactions.
- Benefits extend to businesses, reducing operational costs for import/export and improving cash flow and competitiveness.
- Instant payment systems will be enhanced, allowing cross-border payments to be as fast as domestic ones.
- The SEPA system does not affect the Serbian Dinar or Serbia's monetary sovereignty.
- AIK Banka and ALTA Banka are among the first to be officially included in the SEPA payment scheme starting February 13, 2026.
- All Serbian banks are expected to commence SEPA transactions by May 4, 2026, with applications due by March 20, 2026.
- The estimated annual savings for citizens and businesses are between 50 and 60 million euros.
