TL;DR

  • The play "Ode to Joy" is a prequel to "Night Watch" and is set in the early 1930s.
  • A Hungarian countess living in Belgrade attempts to marry her son, Ivan Radisavljević, to a rich heiress, Marija, to pay off family debts.
  • The play critiques the wasteful, lazy, and extravagant lifestyle of the social elite.
  • The humor is derived from skillfully constructed situations and vaudeville elements like honor, duels, madness, and hypnosis.
  • The humor is considered shallow because it prioritizes formal construction over deeper social reality, lacking true catharsis.
  • The stage direction by Gordan Kičić features theatricality, slapstick, and artificiality, with some actors performing more realistically and effectively.
  • Notable performances include Stefan Bundalo as Rajko Dmitrović, Milica Mihajlović as Countess Andrenyi Erzsébet, and Gordan Kičić as Count Andrenyi István.
  • Ivan Mihailović plays Dragomir, a charming parasite, and Tamara Dragičević portrays Jovana Filipović, a psychotherapist using hypnosis.
  • Đuro Brstina's portrayal of Ivan is noted as lacking naturalness, and Milica Trifunović's Marija is described as an excessively theatrical drunkard and madwoman.
  • Görčin Stojanović's ambitious set design features a lavish two-level house with numerous doors, symbolizing the characters' schemes and the need for social change.
