TL;DR
- EU and India have signed a historic free trade agreement, creating a market of 2 billion people.
- The agreement aims to reduce dependence on the US and China.
- Tariffs on 96.6% of goods from the EU to India will be eliminated or reduced, saving European companies an estimated €4 billion annually.
- Tariffs on motor vehicles from the EU to India will drop from 110% to 10% within a quota, and tariffs on auto parts will be abolished in 5-10 years.
- Other sectors like machinery, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural products will also see tariff reductions, while beef, chicken, rice, and sugar are excluded.
- The deal could potentially boost Serbia's auto component exports indirectly but may harm its textile and steel sectors due to competition.
- Economists view the agreement as a strategic move by the EU to find new markets and by India to accelerate its industrialization.
- The agreement is seen as creating a 'third pole' in global trade, increasing India's role in supply chains and offering the EU a diversified alternative to the US and China.
