TL;DR

  • Nearly 60 million euros in subsidies have been granted to five investors for hotel development in Belgrade for EXPO 2027.
  • The Ritz-Carlton, owned by Milenijum tim, received the largest subsidy of 30 million euros.
  • New incentives allow hotels to receive up to five million euros for partnering with international hotel chains.
  • Belgrade is projected to have around 10,000 hotel rooms after new constructions, which is considered adequate for its population and expected tourism.
  • The success of these investments depends on Serbia's market promotion and its ability to attract tourists.
  • Quality of service and hotel standards are crucial for competitiveness against regional cities like Budapest and Vienna.
  • Beyond hotels, private accommodation and even boat-hotels ('boteli') are considered part of the overall capacity.
  • Profitability for the state from these subsidies is expected within five to six years through VAT revenue, contingent on occupancy rates and effective management.
  • A government commission will oversee the expenditure of these funds, with a requirement for transparent reporting from recipients.
  • Investment in staff training and development is also highlighted as critical for improving the quality of hotel services.
