On a Leap Day
"On a Leap Day" was the name of Damjan Đakov's retrospective exhibition, which was intended to take place in 2020 as per the artist's wish to present his 20-year Italian phase to Belgrade for the first time. The wish remained unfulfilled, but everything he dreamt of then was presented to the Belgrade audience this February at the Gallery of the Ilija M. Kolarac Endowment, in cooperation with the Bugno Art Gallery from Venice, with the support of the Italian Embassy in Belgrade, the Italian Cultural Institute, the family, and especially Aleksandar Peković, a friend and director of KNU.
TL;DR
- The exhibition 'On a Leap Day' presented Damjan Đakov's 20-year Italian artistic phase in Belgrade.
- Đakov's art merges Serbian tradition with Mediterranean influences from Italy.
- His paintings feature deserted cities, geometric architecture, and solitary figures.
- Strong contrasts of light and shadow, and vibrant colors like purple, green, and orange dominate his work.
- The works are left untitled, inviting viewers to interpret them.
