TL;DR

  • A 2025 study in Niš found only 23% of citizens attended a cultural event, and 11% attended two or more.
  • Approximately 200,000 out of 260,000 residents in Niš had minimal or no engagement with culture.
  • The National Theatre in Niš was visited by 9% of citizens, and the Puppet Theatre by 5%.
  • Dr. Kristina Despotović, leading the study, stated that true art does not attract large audiences.
  • While Serbian theaters had over 1 million visits in 2025, this number represents visits, not unique visitors, due to dedicated patrons.
  • Niš allocated 1.6 billion dinars for culture in 2026, its largest budget for the sector in the 21st century.
  • The National Museum in Niš had a record 114,543 visitors in 2025, though many visits were part of excursions and tours.
  • In 2025, 17% of Niš residents bought a book, and 38% read at least one.
  • Similar low engagement is observed in Europe: 14% of French visited theaters, and about 23% of Germans bought a book in 2025.
  • Despotović described the low cultural engagement as a civilizational problem, characterizing the era as one of 'uncultured' people.
  • Media coverage of culture is limited, with less than 15% of total media space dedicated to it on a European level.
