TL;DR
- A23a, the former largest iceberg globally, is now observed as a blue slush, indicating its decline.
- It broke off from the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in Antarctica in 1986 and was grounded for nearly four decades.
- A23a became free in 2020 and its journey included being trapped in an ocean current before heading towards South Georgia.
- It began to break apart in May 2025, avoiding a collision with South Georgia.
- Current satellite images show it significantly reduced in size, covered in meltwater pools and what appears to be mud-like ice.
- The blue areas are meltwater lakes formed as surface ice loses structural integrity.
- The iceberg has lost its title as the world's largest, currently held by D15A.
- The exact current size and whether complete disintegration has begun are unclear.
